What is an AAC Playground Communication Board? A playground communication board is a large, weather-resistant board filled with pictures (symbols) and words. These boards help children who use speech devices or have speech delays communicate with others while they play. It’s a fun, inclusive tool that gives everyone a voice at the park. Why does my city need them? Right now, there are no communication boards at any public playgrounds in our area. Adding these boards will help children with speech and language challenges connect with their friends, classmates, and neighbors. It’s one more way to make our parks welcoming and accessible for all.

FAQs
What is AAC? AAC stands for Augmentative and Alternative Communication. It includes any way of communicating besides speaking like using pictures, signs, gestures, or devices with speech output. Communication boards are a form of AAC, helping individuals who may not be able to use verbal speech to express themselves. Who benefits from communication boards? These boards benefit children with speech and language delays, apraxia of speech, children who use speech-generating devices, autistic children, children with Down syndrome, and many others. They also help all children by promoting kindness, understanding, and inclusive play. Are communication boards only for kids who can’t talk? No! Communication boards help everyone on the playground communicate better whether they have speech-language challenges or just need help finding the right words during play. Where will the boards be installed? We got approval in June 2025 from Yucaipa City Council to start placing them in parks. We’re also working with other cities to place them in local parks. Stay tuned for updates as locations are confirmed! How much does it cost to sponsor a board? Sponsorship costs can vary depending on board size and customization. Fill out the interest form to learn more about specific pricing and recognition options. Can we get communication boards placed at public schools, too? That’s a great question! We’d love to explore options for local schools as well. Many schools are non-profits or have PTO/PTA groups that might be able to team up with us for fundraising. While we can’t make promises about the process, we’re definitely open to working with interested schools or parent groups who want to bring communication boards to their campuses. If that’s you, please let us know on the form!
